This is the most over-marketed category in detailing, so here is the plain version, including the parts that are inconvenient for us to say.
What they physically are
Wax is carnauba — a plant wax — usually blended with oils and solvents. It sits on the paint. It does not bond; it rests there and is removed by heat, detergent and time.
Sealant is a synthetic polymer, typically an amino-functional silicone or acrylic. It bonds to the paint chemically. That bond is what buys the durability difference.
Ceramic coating is a silica (SiO₂), silicon carbide (SiC) or titanium dioxide precursor in a solvent carrier. It cross-links as the solvent flashes off, curing into a hard, semi-permanent glass-like film. It is a genuinely different class of product, not a stronger wax.
Graphene coating is, in nearly every product on the market, a ceramic coating with a small quantity of graphene oxide added. The claims made for the graphene portion vary from plausible (better water behaviour, less water spotting) to unsupportable. Treat a graphene coating as a ceramic coating and judge it on the same specification.
What they honestly last
These are working figures for a Canadian daily driver — road salt, freeze-thaw, winter washing — not manufacturer laboratory figures.

Note what dominates that table: application effort scales with durability far faster than price does. A coating is not expensive because of the bottle. It is expensive because it cannot be applied to paint that has not been corrected, and correction is the real cost.
Choosing
Choose wax if the car is a weekend or show vehicle, gets attention monthly, and you want the specific depth carnauba gives dark paint. Wax on a Canadian daily driver in February is a decorative gesture.
Choose a sealant if you want protection you do not think about, applied twice a year, that survives salt and does not demand a perfect surface underneath. For most people with a normal car this is the correct answer and the one least often recommended.
Choose a coating if — and only if — you are willing to correct the paint first. A coating over swirled paint locks the swirls in for two years under a layer that is harder to remove than the defect was. It is the single most common and most expensive mistake in this category.
Choose a spray topper regardless. Whatever base layer you have, a SiO₂ topper applied after every second wash restores the water behaviour and extends the base’s useful life. It is the cheapest thing in this entire discussion.
What a coating does not do
- It does not prevent scratches. It resists very light marring. A stone chip, a key, or a careless automatic wash will go through it exactly as they would go through clear coat.
- It does not mean you stop washing. Dirt still bonds; it just rinses off more readily. A neglected coated car looks worse than a neglected waxed one because the contrast is greater.
- It does not fill defects. Every defect present at application is present afterwards, sealed under a hard film.
- It does not stop water spotting. Hydrophobic surfaces bead water, beads sit on the surface, and minerals in the bead concentrate as it evaporates. Coated cars spot more readily than uncoated ones if left to air-dry in sun.
Applying a coating, honestly
The order is fixed and every step is load-bearing:
- Wash with a stripping shampoo, not a neutral one.
- Decontaminate — iron remover, then tar, then clay. Check by feel through a plastic bag.
- Correct. Whatever defects remain are now permanent for the life of the coating.
- Panel wipe with an IPA or dedicated prep solution. This removes the polishing oils that would otherwise prevent bonding, and it is the step most often skipped.
- Apply thin, one panel at a time, and level during the flash-off window stated on the data sheet. Too early and you remove it; too late and you have high spots that need machine polishing to fix.
- Cure. No water for the period the manufacturer states — usually 12 to 24 hours, and longer in cold weather.
Most coating failures are step 4 or step 5 errors, not product failures.
The Canadian part
Salt is the variable that makes Canadian advice different. Road salt is aggressive toward every one of these products, and the winter wash frequency that keeps salt off the car is also what wears protection down fastest.
The practical consequence: apply your protection in autumn, not spring. A coating cured in October is doing its job through the six months that matter. A coating applied in May spends its first winter already half worn.
